TikTok introducing a dedicated hub for marketers is a natural next step for the platform that has exploded in popularity in recent years, but had fairly sparse offerings for brand partners. The TikTok for Business name and format reflect similar offerings from rival social media apps like Instagram, but could still help to streamline TikTok’s marketing services and make them more accessible to newcomers. The portal’s mantra, “Don’t Make Ads, Make TikToks,” embodies how TikTok tries to position its content differently than other social media sites. Rather than running traditional digital advertising campaigns, brands typically deploy the types of hashtag challenges or other videos that are picked up by the app’s feed and have the potential to go viral in an organic fashion, as users are recommended content based on trends they’re already interested in watching.

One thing online businesses need to use as a cornerstone of their business decision making process is their digital analytics data (analytics data from a variety of sources: i.e. web analytics, search console, paid search, paid social, social media, etc.). Yet, according to a MIT Sloan Management Review only 15% of more than 2,400 business people surveyed trust their data. While there is no analytics method available that will guarantee 100% accuracy of your digital analytics data, by auditing your data you can ensure the data is as accurate as possible. This will provide you with the confidence to not only trust your data but to leverage the information provided in making objective business decisions, instead of subjective decisions. It is that lack of trust that explains why a mere 43% (according to the same survey) say “they frequently can leverage the data they need to make decisions.” This low confidence in one’s data equals failure.

Pinterest Updates Algorithm to Surface More Content Types
Pinterest is introducing a new ranking model to its home feed in an effort to surface certain types of content more often. Traditionally, Pinterest ranks content in the home feed using a click-through prediction model. Pins that a user is most likely to click on, as determined by past activity, are prioritized in their home feed While that model is effective at maximizing user engagement, it’s not the best model for surfacing a variety of content types. For example, if a user never clicks on video content then they’ll never be shown pins with video in their home feed. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they wouldn’t engage with video content if it were to be surfaced.

Marketing Technology Landscape Supergraphic (2020): Martech 5000 — Really 8,000, but Who’s Counting?
Welcome to the 2020 edition of the marketing technology landscape. Yes, it grew once again, by 13.6%, up to a total of 8,000 martech solutions. That’s after 615 from the 2019 landscape went away, either consolidated with another martech company or simply gone defunct. If you were predicting consolidation, an 8.7% churn rate from one year to the next is pretty significant attrition to support that narrative. But the rate of new venture creation — or at least new venture discovery in our research — outpaced the forces of consolidation once again. In fact, if we first remove the 615 from last year’s 7,040 count, then the growth of new entries on the landscape was actually 24.5%. Think about that: 1 in 5 of the solutions on this year’s martech landscape weren’t there last year. That’s almost the equivalent of the entire 2015 marketing technology landscape.

TikTok, Spotify, Tinder, and Many Other iOS Apps are Crashing Again Due to a Facebook Issue
A number of popular apps and services including TikTok, Spotify, Pinterest, and Tinder are currently broken on iOS devices. There are widespread reports on social media of different apps crashing whenever they’re launched on iPhones and iPads, and there are also outage spikes for the same apps on DownDetector.com. Although the exact cause of the problem isn’t yet confirmed, early reports suggest the outages are caused by Facebook’s SDK, which apps use to manage user logins. Facebook said on its developer platform this morning that it was “aware [of] and investigating an increase in errors on the iOS SDK which is causing some apps to crash.” A similar problem involving the Facebook SDK occurred in May and affected dozens of apps.

How to Advance Black Leaders in Martech
The systemic racism faced by Black people in the United States has been in the news cycle consistently for the past two months, but what barriers does that throw up in the world of marketing technology? There are many barriers, and unfortunately they cannot be solved by a new application or a cool new digital platform. “Employer investment with Black employees is a popular topic right now, but in our industry it is the long-term issues that also need to be addressed,” said Peter Beasley, president of Blacks in Technology, a tech-focused community and media organization dedicated to increasing representation in the industry. “Are Black employees staying long-term? Are they moving up in the organization? Or are they quitting in frustration, or leaving to start their own business? Those are the questions that need to be asked.” For Terry Morris, national president of Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA), a nonprofit organization of professionals in the computer science and IT industries, he also wants the focus to be on results and not talking points or corporate presentations. “The jury is still out on the results,” said Morris. “I am pleased the topic is still timely and the energy is still there. Black people have a lot of interest in the technology industry and we need the resources to match.”

Coupang, a SoftBank-Backed Start-Up, is Crushing Amazon to Become South Korea’s Biggest Online Retailer
South Korea is a sought-after market for e-commerce companies, with one of the highest rates of internet penetration and smartphone adoption in the world, helped by superfast network speeds. While the market remains fiercely competitive, in just 10 years e-commerce giant Coupang has managed to become the country’s most popular online retailer. The Seoul-based company owes its dominant position in part to its slate of fast delivery options, which is powered by its own logistics business, Rocket Delivery. Shoppers can choose from millions of products, many of which are available for overnight or same-day delivery, from fresh produce to tablets. Usage of Voice Has Plateaued — For Now
Roy Amara’s oft-cited law states, “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” This appears to especially applicable to voice and voice search. While there’s been steady growth in the use of voice and virtual assistants since Siri was introduced more than a decade ago, the market hasn’t been transformed. Smart speakers are even a better case-in-point: widely adopted, they’ve failed to become the revolutionary product many had expected. Now survey data from Perficient Digital suggests voice may have hit a plateau of sorts. This is the fourth year the agency has asked over 1,000 U.S. adults about their use of voice, voice search and virtual assistants. Last year, the survey found voice was second only to the mobile browser as the “first choice” entry point for mobile search (with all answers combined, it ranked fourth).

Op-Ed: Andrew Yang: Make Tech Companies Pay You for Your Data
Whenever you sign up for a new social media service or website, or download an app onto your phone or computer, you’ll typically see some long disclaimer language written in legalese. You scroll through it quickly and click the “I agree” button. This fine print is known as a privacy policy. It essentially lays out (sometimes in the most convoluted way possible) how the site or app can use or share your data. The problem is, no one actually reads the language. You just click “yes” and hope for the best, since that’s the price you pay for a free website or app or social media network. It seems like a pretty sweet deal. But that’s not the deal we’re getting.

How Retailers Can Use Page Feeds to Level Up Their Dynamic Search Ads

Retailers, however, are facing the wild, wild west when it comes to planning for the holiday season. There have already been a lot of unexpected search trends that we’ve witnessed, from an increase in demand for hobbies-related searches to back-up generators, to bread machines, to home fitness equipment. As advertisers, we need to be there to capture these emerging search queries and ensure we are able to show relevant ads for them. That’s where Dynamic Search Ads (DSAs) can help.
