Walmart to Pilot Test Live-Streamed Video Shopping on TikTok
Walmart and TikTok announced this morning they will be partnering on the first pilot test of a new shoppable product experience on TikTok’s social video app. Walmart, as you may recall, had planned to invest in TikTok when the app was being threatened with a ban from the U.S. market unless it sold its U.S. operations to an American company, per a Trump administration executive order — a ban that’s now on pause after multiple legal challenges. Walmart’s interest in TikTok, however, has not waned. The retailer, though seemingly an odd fit for a social network, had seen the potential to attract a younger online consumer through video and, in particular, live streamed video.

Instagram Adds New Creative Tools in Reels and Stories
Instagram has added some new additions to your creative options in both Reels and Stories, while also tweaking a few existing functions and expanding the roll out of its Branded Content tags. First off, on Reels – as shared by social media expert Matt Navarra, Instagram’s adding new ‘Audio Mix’ and Voice-over’ options into your Reels composition tools.

Facebook’s gone on the attack over Apple’s coming changes to its Identifier for Advertisers – or IDFA – in iOS 14, which will likely make it much harder for companies to track user activity within apps, as users will be specifically prompted to approve or reject all forms of data tracking. Facebook has been warning about the impacts of the pending IDFA changes for months, and with Apple expected to launch the update early in the new year, The Social Network is ramping up its opposition, now framing it as an attack on SMBs, with Apple seeing all the benefits.

What Would It Take for New Search Engines to Succeed?
For over half of its 22-year history, Google has been the most prevalent search engine in the United States. Over that term, its perception has gone from quintessential Silicon Valley startup and underdog to the gatekeeper of the internet, presiding over algorithms that have massive business implications and developing a reputation for expanding its business into different sectors in the name of providing a better experience to its users. More recently, increased scrutiny over its business practices has led government regulators to crack down on perceived improprieties and some users have shown a slight sway towards a more privacy-oriented search experience. Pushback has also come from other search engines, such as DuckDuckGo and Ecosia, which have been vocal critics of how Google is presenting search engine alternatives to Android users in the EU.
