It wasn’t the next big thing we were expecting when Slack came into the world in late 2013. Team chat was already everywhere if you wanted it. HipChat had built a growing business around team chat, as had the Basecamp team’s Campfire. There were chat apps galore on mobile, thanks to Apple’s iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook’s Messenger apps. And for geeks, IRC still worked. But here came Slack, promising to help you “Be less busy.” with “an infinite brain for your whole team.” It wasn’t just a team chat app. Slack positioned itself as a new way to work. And that, among other marketing tips that former Slack head of growth Merci Victoria Grace shared in her Capiche AMA, is what turned Slack into a new software giant.

Bing Updates Backlink Research Tool
Bing updated an improved backlink research tool and announced it on Twitter. The backlink tool shows links from unique top referring domains, links on a page per page level as well as the top anchor text. It also shows the same data for competitors. This makes Bing’s backlink tool useful for researching links as part of a link building process.

Boost in Voice Calls Poses Opportunities for Marketers Using Call Analytics Platforms
While many expected the work-from-home revolution sparked by COVID-19 to result in higher- than-usual traffic on the internet, what has come as something of a surprise is the dramatic increase in the volume of voice calls. In late March, Verizon reported that its network was seeing more than double the number of phone calls each day (800 million wireless calls) as it sees on a typical Mother’s Day – its highest Sunday of the year for call volume. “For years, we’ve seen a steady decline in the amount of time people spend talking to one another, especially on wireless devices,” Kyle Malady, Verizon’s CTO, said in a recent New York Times article. “The move to staying home has reignited people’s hunger to stay connected, voice-to-voice.” AT&T has seen the same trend, with voice calls up significantly over pre-COVID-19 levels, whether they’re occurring on mobile phones, landlines or using Wi-Fi calling.
