Predicting the Future of Digital Marketing
by Corey Padveen
As technology and consumer behavior rapidly evolve, predicting the future trends for digital marketing is a challenging task. AI in particular is creating the pathway for marketing opportunities that did not exist even just a few months ago. However, there are a number of factors we can look at and make some educated projections in terms of where things are headed. Here are a few potential trends and developments that may provide the framework for the evolution of digital marketing:
- Rapid increase in the use of AI: ChatGPT and other AI tools combined with AI search functionality will deliver some of the most important advances in digital marketing. The ability for machine learning algorithms to analyze and evaluate consumer data will play an important role in the creation and automation of marketing campaigns further advanced by the personalization of advertising content.
- Spotlight on personalization: The comprehensive availability of consumer data makes it increasingly easy for marketers to customize individual messages at a granular level. As AI onboards and machine learning advances, the trend of creating more personalized experiences for consumers will continue to grow.
- Growth of chatbots and messaging apps: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat offer businesses the opportunity to use chatbots for improved and more efficient customer interaction. Chatbots are quickly becoming more refined and capable of handling complex, almost human-like interactions.
- Acceleration in the use of voice search: The growing popularity of VA’s such as Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant will lead more businesses to explore the opportunities with these technologies led by AI as it drives intelligent response customization enabling more businesses to optimize their content for voice search.
- Prioritization on privacy and data protection: With a growing awareness on the part of consumers with respect to data privacy, brands and digital marketers will be faced with continued demands to protect customer information. This will necessitate further emphasis on the safeguarding of how data is collected, stored, and used for marketing purposes. AI will also lead to a need for more protection of data as the ability to gather additional information from consumers will become more prevalent
- Diverse and immersive content formats: With advances in technology, content formats such as virtual and augmented reality will gradually become more mainstream. Brands and their agencies will need to tailor their strategies to include these types of marketing technologies by creating interactive experiences for their audience.
- Eye on the importance of video content: Video will continue to grow in importance with tools like TikTok and Instagram. Short-form, easily consumed videos that engage and entertain will continue to grow in popularity with a growing consumer segment, in particular with the younger demographic.
- Hyper targeted influencer marketing: Brands will continue to turn to influencers but they will insist on proof of measurable performance. Aside from major brands with significant budgets, reliance will be less on influencers who have large followings and more on those with followers who truly rely on the influencer for informed, educated information when it comes to product buying decisions.
- The continued influence of social media: As social media platforms evolve, brands will need to keep up with the rapidly changing landscape and accompanying innovations. These platform offerings will continue to improve and expand on the opportunities they offer business to reach their target audiences and innovate their marketing initiatives.
In summary, the evolution of digital marketing will be shaped to a great degree by technological innovation combined with the advent of AI and the benefits it will bring to the marketing ecosystem. The ability to further automate the interaction between consumers and brands and provide better informed responses in reply to consumer behaviours and preferences will help to streamline the way in which customers and businesses interact.
